Would you recommend cites to see/backpacking paths in New Zealand?
Hi everyone! Thanks in advance for trying to help! I’m planning a trip to NZ mid Feb through March. I haven’t bought the tickets yet because I can’t seem to find “the best deal.” Is it best to fly into Auckland (since a flight to Christchurch requires I land in Auckland anyway), back pack around the north island, cross to the south via ferry, spend 2/3 of my time there in the south, and then make the trip back up to the airport (or maybe try to fly out of CHC)? What treks would you recommend? I’ve got friends/distant associations/host families I can visit and stay with along the way, my lightweight Camping Gear for nights without, and a little ($) bit of money for hostels. I’m trying to figure out how to link up the trails and figure out if I’m going to need to rent a car. I’d love to hear about what you did and see if I can’t mold your ideas into one big awesome nature/adventure/culture trip!
theres heaps of great treks in NZ…i would recommend the tongariro crossing, milford track (although you may need to book well in advance for this…if u couldn’t do that try the routeburn track) and the abel tasman coast track. This would give you a really good variety of natural landscapes.
I’d say it’d be best to arrive in Auckland & make your way south (not forgetting to visit the places north of Auckland first though…Bay of Islands, Hokianga, Waipoua Forest are my faves). You could catch the overlander train from Auckland to Wellington (i’ve heard its really good, never been on it though), and the ferry is definately a great way to get to the South Island. (don’t forget Te Papa in Wellington-awesome museum)
I would suggest hire a car to get your way around the south island, that way you really get to experience the scenery of the more off the beaten track places. I personally love Lake Pukaiki, Lake Tekapo, Lindis Pass and just the general spaciousness of McKenzie Country which are all on your way down to Queenstown from Christchurch. The West Coast of the south island is also great in my opinion, not sure the best route to get there though. I guess you could catch the tranz-alpine from Christchurch to Greymouth. They advertise the tranz-alpine as a spectacular train ride but I personally didn’t think it was that great. I went Feb-March too & there wasn’t much snow on the mountains & they only had one tiny viewing platform so I wouldn’t recommend the tranz-alpine. I wouldn’t recommend hitch-hiking if your by yourself either, unfortunately its just not safe enough anymore.
It’d probably be easier to fly out of Christchurch back home, but not sure if they’d have the flights your after. If you did head back up to Auckalnd to fly home that means you’d be able to stop off at places like Rotorua, Waitomo, Gisbourne, Napier, Tongariro on the way.
